Spring Breakers

65/100

A little disappointed by this, to be honest, although I certainly don’t understand what more I was expecting from a Harmony Korine film. I like what he does with cheesecake (gives you a plate so big and sugary that you feel like you’re going to be sick even though you wolfed the goddamned thing down) and I appreciate the irony of his self-consciously poetic approach to tawdriness. Biggest problem is that, while I dig the film’s dreamy pace, as lyricism eventually gives way to longueurs I start to feel Korine’s approach is a little too 4/20 for my tastes. But I have been humming James Franco’s oft-repeated word-jazz theme song (“Spraaang Brayke Foe-EV-ah”) to myself for weeks.
