In the wake of what happened on Tuesday, I guess this doesn't qualify as very bad news. But it looks like bad news nonetheless: Shake-up at The Castro.

The old, ornate Castro Theatre in San Francisco has long been a sentimental favorite of mine, but the theater's owners have apparently decided to take control of the programming, with an eye on more family films (such as, erm, Cheaper by the Dozen) and fewer gay-interest films -- a curious choice for a theater famously located on Gay Street, USA. To that end, they've fired their 16-year director of programming, Anita Monga. Theater Manager Stacey Wisnia quit in protest. One festival curator is threatening to take his show elsewhere, and Strand owner Marcus Hu says Castro owners Ted and Karen Nasser have "complained about the gay content of some of the films." And the culture wars continue.

Is this someone's idea of a joke? Perhaps the new Castro management's problem is that they can't have sexual release without the burden of money, prestige, and power.
