This story about the making of I ♥ Huckabees is amazing. Did I ever mention that when I first moved to New York to work for the American Booksellers Association, I took the same job that David O. Russell had just a few years previously? Judging from some of the handwritten notes scrawled across the backs of press releases in the ABA files, he was working on the screenplay for Spanking the Monkey while he was there.

Sounds like Mr. Russell needs to spend a little more time w/ his monkey, if you know what I mean.
This is an interesting variation on the David Foster Wallace piece he wrote for Harper's after following an extraterrestrial David Lynch around on the set of Lost Highway. In both instances, the directors come off looking more than just a little nuts, and in Russell's case you've gotta feel some for the actors who put on brave faces, and offer up nice platitudes w/r/t the genius at work, but who I reckon are, in their private moments (and in Tomlin's case, not so private moments) probably cussing the bastard out. Still and all, it's not exactly coal mining, and if what I'm hearing about this film is on-target, the final product (and what I'm sure were handsome stipends) will be their final reward.
