WELCOME TO NEW YORK!

If you're looking for an independent flick, the Film Forum in Manhattan gets rave reviews .... But the cinema holds another independent streak you won't see advertised. In all of 2003, it was the only Manhattan theater slapped with three critical health violations on one inspection.

In its continuing series of scare stories about health code violations at local eateries, New York City's crusading WCBS has now tackled movie theaters. I guess I appreciate the consumer-watchdog sentiment but, I mean, it's news that they found mice at a downtown joint like Film Forum? And is that supposed to spook us? Nah, Gotham cinephiles are made of sturdier stock than that. (I don't know many serious movie geeks who eat popcorn at the cinema anyway.) WCBS ought to head up here to the Westchester burbs, where popcorn moths fill the auditorium air and rats can be seen criss-crossing the aisles of some of our finer exhibition establishments.

DON'T LOOK NOW

Hey guys. Checking my stats after a week in Las Vegas, I find that my review of Don't Look Now is getting a buttload of hits, ranking second just behind The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (the original, benefitting no doubt from searches for the new one, just out on DVD) in my own personal hit parade.

Thing is, when I check the hits in my log, the vast majority of them have no referrer attached. In other words, people don't seem to be linking to my review from other pages, or finding it in a Google or Yahoo search. So really, I'm posting just in case anyone reading this has any idea why 1500 people might suddenly want to read about an old Nicolas Roeg film at my Web site. Thanks guys.

Also, in case you haven't heard, the legendary Mike D'Angelo has left Time Out New York.
