In a completely not-startling development, the Online Film Critics Society, of which I am a member, has given its award for, well, basically for everything, to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Rings led with awards in nine categories; of all the other films released last year, only Lost In Translation managed more than a single nod from the OFCS.
Yay Bill Murray and yay Naomi Watts. I'd have enjoyed seeing Sean Astin share in the love with a supporting actor award from this Rings-happy group, but it was not to be. In fact, the only categories The Return of the King was eligible for that it did not win were the four performance categories.
Here's the complete list.

It startles me that they actually voted ROTK the best film of the year. Sure it was a fun watch, but to consider it the creme of the crop just baffles my mind. Eighteen endings and an overall virtual repeat of TTT had me thinking people would come to their senses and realize it is not Citizen Kane, but it is not to be I suppose. I won't be buying the eighteen disc set I'll have ya know, even though I may be the only one without a copy.

Bryant,
When are you going to serve up a (hopefully lengthy) review of von Trier's masterpiece, "Dogville"?
Anyway, I must agree that "The Return of the King" is receiving several plaudits too many -- a good film overall, to be sure, but it's likely to be eclipsed by the inevitable (and inevitably superior) extended edition, which will undoubtedly aid in highlighting the somewhat over-bloated fuss being made over the theatrical cut.

Dogville is coming. It gets a spoiler-free paragraph in a year-end omnibus that I'm finishing up this weekend, but in order to really take a look at it, you pretty much have to divulge everything that occurs in the final reel. So it's coming -- sometime between now and the official U.S. release, depending on how much writing time I have!

Hey speaking of year end awards when do we get to see your top 10 list? :)

I think the third is the best of all three movies. Who seconds this motion?
