Broke my freakin' foot

OK, I've broken my foot. Not a bad break. What they call a "clean" break. Not likely to require surgery, which is certainly something to be thankful for. But that doesn't make it any more fun to lug my oversized frame around the apartment on crutches, doing the "work from home" thing until I feel OK about hauling myself around Westchester County without breaking anything else.

Fortunately, I managed to polish off 28 Days Later and Criterion's phenomenal new by Brakhage shortly before being put in a position where sitting still for a two-hour movie frankly isn't real comfortable. (If only I had gotten around to putting that TV in the bedroom ... ) But you know we take these things one day at a time etc. and I hope to be back in the swing of things soon. A review of 28 Days Later, which borrows smartly from George Romero without whiffing it until the third act, should be coming soon. For now, check out my review of the Brakhage set, which runs a ripe 4,000+ words thanks to being written in the bedroom, sans Internet connection, and away from the usual distractions that pollute my workspace. I could get used to this -- but, of course, I wouldn't want to.

Feel better, bud.

Bad break (groans all around) and all that, but you know if the result is we got a stellar two page review of Stan B's Criterion disc, one might argue that all that suffering for one's art has been worth it. Of course, one might also note that one does not have a broken foot oneself, rendering such reflections those of a selfish prick.

All the best, bud.

Hi, this is Bryant's wife and he won't be happy I'm doing this but I need to let folks know something. If you are feeling ignored it's because he's in the hospital. His broken foot gifted him with blood clots. He was in ICU from Tuesday night to this evening. He is doing much better but won't be home till at least Monday. There is no net in the hospital so he won't be reading his email until then. If you need me to tell him something please email it to me and I'll print it out for him.
Thanks, Karen
