The Dead Dawn Again
I was only mildly surprised to see that, although George Romero has yet to find financing to allow him to complete the ... of the Dead cycle with the long-in-gestation Twilight of the Dead, Hollywood is happily handing out money to this guy for a remake of Romero's masterpiece Dawn of the Dead.
I wish Mr. Snyder the best of luck. And of course everyone has to pay the bills at some point in their careers. But I really wonder if the guy who directed this BMW commercial has a sensibility that's compatible in any way with Romero's mordant take on consumer culture. (Hope Sarah Polley gets a fat paycheck, at least.)
Meanwhile, I enjoyed this Kill Bill study guide at hkflix.com.

It's not surprising that Romero can't find funding for the conclusion to his opus, just look at the similar fates which have befallen aging genre masters like Fuller & Hill. Plus it's unlikely that Romero's subversive political outlook would sit well with the current social climate. At least we have his next project, The Ill, with Asia Argento to look forward to, & I also strongly recommend the 1979 classic Martin, still one of the most underrated films of that decade.

Yeah, good call on Martin. I also recommend Romero's The Crazies -- most especially to anyone who had a good time with 28 Days Later, which borrows as extensively from this as it does from Romero's zombie movies. I had never seen it until recently, when Blue Underground released a nice DVD version.
If we ever needed a new Romero zombie movie, we need it now. Why can't the next Powerball winner be a horror buff who decides to throw $10 million worth of largesse Romero's way ... ?
On the subject of Asia Argento, she seems to be making some coin hawking jeans for some clothing company I had never heard of. The magazine ads are shot by, I think, David LaChapelle; I have no idea if there's a TV equivalent.
