What can I say? This is the one theater in all of New York City that’s absolutely guaranteed to draw ’em in from far and wide. The screen is big and the auditorium bigger. The lobby in itself is something to behold, although every time I’ve been at the Ziegfeld I was part of a bum rush for choice seats and couldn’t really appreciate the decor. Even better since the 1996 renovation, the seats have been reupholstered and the staff has obviously gone through courtesy training. As always, the Ziegfeld’s best feature may be its sound system, which is loud and mighty impressive. (The high end screech of The Lost World was actually a punishment to the ears, but I'm unclear whether that's the fault of the theater or simply a limitation of the DTS sound format.) A. (Frazer)
The place to watch "event" films, as the screen is huge and the sound system is first rate (I don't think it's THX, though. [I think the problem with THX certification at the Ziegfeld is ambient noise and/or architectural faults ... -bf-]) Since it has a reputation as the place to watch "event" films, tends to get highly enthusiastic audiences. (That certainly was the case when I went to see Vertigo and the first two Star Wars films there.) A. (Odell)
