VILLAGE EAST
181 Second Ave.

Beware. I’ve been here twice, and the individual auditoriums seem sectioned off in very strange ways, offering a challenge for your neck muscles. Presumably there’s a big(ger), better designed screen on the main floor. Judging from the offbeat line-up, this is where misguided indie films come to die. C-. (Frazer)

Ho-hum. C-. (Odell)

A very strange theater. At any given moment, it seems to survive only by showing blockbusters and Angelika hold-overs on 2 or 3 screens. The rest of the space is almost always given over to films that are being dumped by their distributors. The first-floor theaters are pretty good, but the tiny basement theater is a must-to-avoid. I had the misfortune of seeing First Strike in this theater -- the screen is so small that it had to be letterboxed! (Erickson)
