I have little to say about the Union Square 14, except that it's a decent place to catch a mainstream movie in the Village. The theaters are of the stadium design, a development about which I'm dubious, though it does offer good sightlines for everyone. The auditorium I visited had an aisle right down the middle, where all the best seats should be. I kinda like the "love seat" design (armrests fold up between pairs of seats), a first in NYC as far as I know, and I admire the all-digital sound systems. Picture and sound were quite good, but didn't knock my socks off. (Note to whoever runs the theater's Web page: THX is not a "sound system.")
In short, I may return if I'm in the neighborhood (The Strand, Forbidden Planet and the Virgin Megastore are all within spitting distance), or if the rest of the city's good theaters fail to book a particular film (Fight Club is a recent example of a flick that was probably on best display at the Union Square 14). Kudos go to United Artists, about whose theaters elsewhere in Manhattan and Queens I've heard only bad things, for trying to do the right thing downtown. Now can we please have an arthouse multiplex with similar image and sound quality? B+.(Frazer) |
