Top Hat (1935)

[****]

The splendid artifice that was the movie musical of the 1930s probably hit its apex right here. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers twirl their way through a typically silly farce of mistaken identity to the tunes of Irving Berlin ("Cheek to Cheek," in particular, is so lovely here that it may well give you goosebumps). Even if you can't quite appreciate the music, sit back and get clued in to why Fred Astaire is one of the movies' all-time great physical performers.
