Solaris (1971, rel. 1972)

[****]

Esthetically, Soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky picks up where 2001: A Space Odyssey left off with this chilling science fiction story based on a novel by Stansilaw Lem. The story concerns a sort of mystery on board a space station in orbit around Solaris, a planet that may be made entirely of clouds. An investigator probes the nature of a few unexplained deaths -- and undeaths -- and makes some otherworldly discoveries. Even stranger than Kubrick’s film, this is something of an endurance test, but also a uniquely rewarding experience. Restored in 1989 for a limited theatrical release and a new life on video.
