Island of Lost Souls (1933)

[****]

Is this the greatest horror film ever made? Nah, probably not. But it could be. By far the best version of H.G. Wells’ story "The Island of Dr. Moreau," this intoxicating fable cautions us one more time against playing God with human life. Charles Laughton was never more terrific than he his in this role as the brilliant but doomed doctor who lords it over an island where he experiments with human/animal crossbreeding. Also featuring Bela Lugosi ("His is the House of Pain!") and 19-year old Kathleen Burke as Lota, the Panther Woman. After spending many years in heavy rotation on the AMC cable channel, this was finally recently released both on videotape and laserdisc.
