Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

[****]

Could this sequel be on the same level as the legendary original? Yep. Director James Whale returns to guide a story that’s made all the more touching by its familiarity. Boris Karloff’s creature -- lovable and reprehensible all at once -- has been taken ill by that most debilitating affliction: loneliness. Dr. Frankenstein is persuaded to try to whip up a mate for his angry progeny, and the results are both marvelously campy and wholly devastating. Watch out for Dr. Pretorious and his creations, which involve brilliant special effects that look pretty impressive even today.
