Beauty and the Beast [Belle et la Bete] (1946)

[****]

Jean Cocteau's frighteningly beautiful surrealist take on the classic story is a potent antidote if Disney's given you one swig too many of the sweet stuff. It's still a love story, it's very much a fairy tale, and it's not brain dead. Shot by cinematographer Henri Alekan (who would much later work with German filmmaker Wim Wenders on Wings of Desire), Beauty and the Beast discovers the essence of this fable by juxtaposing the lyrical with the horrific.
